UAE Ranks Second Globally in Shopping Satisfaction: The Role of Digital Platforms and Momex Solutions

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has solidified its position as a global leader in shopping satisfaction, ranking second worldwide. A recent survey conducted by PYMNTS Intelligence and Visa Acceptance Solutions highlights that 71% of UAE consumers extensively utilize digital features to enhance their shopping experiences. This article explores the key findings of the survey, the impact of digital platforms on shopping satisfaction, and how Momex is playing a pivotal role in this evolving landscape.

The Rise of Click-and-Mortar Shopping in the UAE

Digital Features Enhance Shopping Satisfaction

The ‘2024 Global Digital Shopping Index: UAE Edition,’ conducted from September to December 2023, surveyed 1,392 consumers and 212 merchants in the UAE. The survey reveals that UAE consumers leverage an average of 14 different digital features during their shopping journeys, significantly enhancing their satisfaction levels. Notably, nearly 9 in 10 retail shoppers in the UAE depend on these digital aids for their in-store shopping experiences.

Key digital features favored by UAE consumers include:

  • Preferred payment methods

  • Mobile apps or mobile-specific sites

  • Easy-to-navigate online stores and shopping carts

  • Digital availability of product details and reviews

These features streamline the shopping process, making it more convenient and enjoyable, leading to a 56% increase in satisfaction among Click-and-Mortar shoppers compared to in-store-only shoppers.

Market Dynamics and Merchant Opportunities

Despite the high adoption rate of digital features by consumers, the survey indicates that UAE merchants are currently offering one fewer feature on average than they did in the previous year. This gap between consumer demand and market supply presents a significant opportunity for merchants to expand their digital offerings and attract a broader shopper base.

Salima Gutieva, Vice President and Country Manager for the UAE at Visa, emphasizes the importance of tailoring digital offerings to meet the diverse needs of consumers. “Digital features can simplify shopping, and our data finds a correlation between more features used and higher satisfaction. This presents an opportunity for Visa to partner with UAE merchants to build on this lead by layering digital features atop an already first-rate in-store experience,” Gutieva notes.

Demographic Insights and Shopping Behaviors

Millennials and Generation Z Leading the Shift

The survey highlights that Millennials and Generation Z are the primary drivers of the shift towards Click-and-Mortar shopping strategies in the UAE. Approximately 43% of UAE consumers adopt Click-and-Mortar shopping methods, which is 4 percentage points higher than the global average of 39%.

Parents with children also show a higher propensity for using digital shopping features, with 61% of parents utilizing these tools compared to 33% of non-parents. This demographic's demand for features that accommodate busy households, such as family-friendly pickup options and engaging online experiences, underscores the need for tailored digital solutions.

Sector-Specific Opportunities: The Grocery Industry

While 89% of retail customers in the UAE regularly turn to digital features, only 45% of grocery shoppers do the same. The disparity highlights a significant opportunity for innovation in the grocery sector. The average UAE shopper uses roughly 14 digital features overall, while grocery shoppers typically use just 10. To maintain their leading position in customer satisfaction, UAE grocers must innovate and provide the digital features their customers desire.
